Most people only think about storage when a move has already gone sideways. In practice, the customers who have the smoothest moves are often the ones who booked storage from the outset.
Here are the four situations where it makes the biggest difference.
1. Your chain does not line up
The classic case: you complete on your sale on a Friday but cannot get into your purchase until the following week. Rather than trying to force both into one day, your belongings go into secure storage and come out when you are ready.
This also removes the pressure that causes chains to collapse — you become a far more flexible buyer and seller.
2. You are downsizing
When you are moving to a smaller property, it is genuinely difficult to know what will fit until you are standing in the new rooms. Storage lets you move in, live with the space for a few weeks, and then decide what comes out of storage and what gets sold or donated.

3. You are renovating before you move in
New flooring, a new kitchen or a rewire are all far easier in an empty house. Storing your furniture until the work is finished protects it from dust and damage, and gives the trades a clear run.
4. You are moving abroad or between rentals
For international moves, there is almost always a gap between leaving one home and arriving at the next. The same applies between tenancies, and for students heading home over summer.
What to look for in a storage provider
- Container storage rather than open warehousing — your belongings stay in their own sealed container, handled once at each end
- Security — alarmed premises, controlled access, insurance cover
- Dry and ventilated — damp is the main risk to furniture in storage
- Flexible terms — chains move; your storage should be able to as well
- Same company doing the move — one point of contact, one set of paperwork, no handovers
How to pack for storage
Items going into storage need packing slightly differently to items going straight to a new house:
- Everything must be completely dry before it goes in
- Use uniform, sturdy cartons that stack — see our packing materials
- Cover upholstery and mattresses properly
- Keep an inventory, and keep anything you might need near the door
- Never store food, plants or anything flammable
