One hundred years ago in the Yorkshire region, of the UK (1923), moving house was a far more complicated and labor-intensive process than it is today. With the limited availability of motorised vehicles, families often had to rely on horse-drawn carts. Including their own muscle power to transport their belongings to their new homes.
To begin the moving process, families would carefully pack their belongings into wooden crates, chests, and other containers, which would then be loaded onto the carts. The carts would then be driven by horse to the new location, with the families following behind on foot. This process could take several trips, and families often had to spend several days on the road, camping out along the way.
Once they arrived at the new location, the process of unpacking and setting up their new home would begin. This was another time-consuming and physically demanding task, as the families would have to unload and unpack. Every crate, chest, and piece of furniture, and often with limited assistance.
Moving House Was Still A Common Occurrence
Despite the difficulties of the process, moving house in this way was a common occurrence in Yorkshire and throughout the UK at the time. It was a way of life for many families, who would take the time and effort required to move to a new home as a necessary part of life.

Yorkshire’s population 100 years ago was a lot different. It is difficult to provide an exact population of specific towns in Yorkshire 100 years ago, as reliable data for that time period may not be readily available. However, according to historical census records, the population of Yorkshire as a whole was around 5.5 million in 1911. The largest cities in Yorkshire at the time, such as Leeds and Sheffield, had populations in the hundreds of thousands. While smaller towns and villages likely had populations in the low thousands.
