How to Choose a Removal Company in Hull: 10 Questions to Ask

Choosing a removal company is one of the biggest decisions you will make when moving house in Hull or the East Riding. Get it right and moving day runs like clockwork. Get it wrong and you are chasing a van that never turns up.

After more than 150 years of moving families across East Yorkshire, here are the ten questions we think every customer should ask before booking any removal firm.

1. Are you properly insured?

This is the single most important question. Ask specifically about goods in transit cover and public liability cover, and ask what the limit is per item. A reputable firm will tell you straight away and put it in writing.

2. Will someone come and survey my home?

A quote given over the phone without anyone seeing your property is a guess. A proper pre-move survey means the crew arrives with the right size vehicle and the right number of people. It is also your chance to point out the piano, the loft full of boxes, or the narrow staircase.

3. How long have you been trading?

Longevity matters in this industry. Ask how long the company has operated under its current name and whether it is family run. You can read about our own history here — Hardakers has been moving people since 1870.

4. Can I see recent reviews?

Ask for recent, verifiable feedback rather than a handful of quotes on a homepage. We publish every customer testimonial we receive, unedited.

5. What exactly is included in the price?

Clarify what is and is not covered before you commit:

  • Dismantling and reassembling furniture
  • Protective materials — blankets, covers, mattress bags
  • Packing, if you want it (see our packing services)
  • Waiting time if completion is delayed
  • Parking permits or long carries from van to door

6. Who will actually turn up on the day?

Ask whether the crew are employed staff or subcontractors. Directly employed, trained teams tend to take more care — they are the ones whose names end up in the reviews.

7. What happens if my completion date moves?

Chain delays are a fact of life. Ask what happens if your date slips by a day, or by a week, and whether short-term storage is available if you need to move out before you can move in.

8. Do you handle specialist items?

Pianos, antiques, safes, garden machinery and large artwork all need specific handling. If you own any of these, check the company has done it before — this is what our specialist removals service exists for.

9. How do you protect my property?

Floor runners, door frame protectors and bannister covers should be standard. Damage to the house you are leaving can cost you at the point of sale.

10. Can I have it in writing?

A written quotation listing the service, the date, the crew size and the terms protects both sides. Never rely on a verbal figure.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a removal company?

Four to six weeks is comfortable for most moves, and longer over summer and at month end. We cover this in detail in our guide on how far in advance to book a removal company.

Is the cheapest quote usually the best value?

Rarely. The lowest quote often reflects a smaller van, a smaller crew or thinner insurance. Compare what is included, not just the bottom line.

Do I need to be there on moving day?

Yes, or someone you trust who can make decisions. See what happens on moving day for a full run-through.
